Be my Valentine: Top ten cartoons of the week

Editors love holiday cartoons, so it’s no surprise a number of clever Valentine’s Day cartoons topped our most-reprinted list this week.

Dave Whamond went with the candy heart approach, filling them with phrases that sum up the current environment in Washington. Bob Englehart went with the gift of a dozen eggs in his popular cartoon, a pricey extravagance these days anyone would take over a box of chocolates.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Top ten cartoons of the week

A lot has happened since Donald Trump took office just three weeks ago. USAID is gutted, Elon Musk is taking over government agencies, and Trump wants the U.S. to occupy Gaza, Panama, and Greenland.

One thing that hasn’t happened? The price of eggs hasn’t gone down, as Guy Parsons points out in our most-reprinted cartoon of the week.

I thought John Darkow really hit the nail on the head with his cartoon about the return of doomscrolling. Make sure your phone is charged, because Trump’s second term has 205 weeks remaining.

Expensive eggs: Top ten cartoons of the week

So now that Trump’s president, when will prices start going down?

This week, the price of a dozen eggs continued to rise, and is expected to increase by about 20% this year, according to the Department of Agriculture’s price outlook.

So it’s not a shock our most popular cartoon of the week, drawn by John Darkow, was a funny look at the high cost of eggs. I also chucked at Dave Granlund’s take, which featured security guards escorting out a women with her groceries.

The Trump show: Top ten cartoons of the week

Welcome back to the Trump show!

It’s been a dizzying few days, with Trump issuing executive orders on everything from immigration to crypto. Some people are exhausted, as Dave Whamond illustrated in this week’s most-reprinted cartoon.

I also enjoyed Jeff Koterba’s cartoon, which features Trump on the edge of a cliff (with his trademark giant red tie) making a show of unity to Democrats. Jeff had a busy week – he drew four of our 10 most-reprinted cartoons on a number of topics, including TikTok and a ceasefire in Gaza, news that appeared to get lost in the wall-to-wall coverage of all things Trump. Get used to it.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#2. Jeff Koterba

#3. Jeff Koterba

#4. Dick Wright

Fire fatigue: Top ten cartoons of the week

While Donald Trump’s inauguration is next week, America’s focus has been out west, as deadly fires continue to burn around Los Angeles.

At least 27 people have been killed by the fires, while thousands have been evacuated. Countless lives have been impacted by the destruction, which early estimates say could cost hundreds of billions of dollars.

One of our most-reprinted cartoons on the fire was Jeff Koterba’s touching tribute to the first responders, volunteers, and donors who are selflessly helping their fellow citizens in a moment of need. It’s hard to be critical in the middle of a disaster, but I did appreciate R.J. Matson’s cartoon about the blame game going on in Los Angeles, pegged around fire hydrants lacking water during the initial stages of the fire.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Thin ice: Top ten cartoons of the week

In the lull between New Year’s and Trump’s inauguration, our most-reprinted cartoons of the week covered a hodgepodge of topics, everything from misinformation to annoying snow to exploding cybertrucks.

Our most popular cartoon this week came from the pen of Chris Weyant, who used recent winter weather to mock Congress over its long history of not living up to its promises.

Adam Zyglis had two cartoons in our top five. One was a look at the devolution of Facebook into X, while the other was a sympathetic look at the tragedy in New Orleans following a New Year’s Day attack.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

2025 is here! Top ten cartoons of the week

2025 will certainly be a year to remember, capped with Donald Trump returning to the White House. But 2024 was no slouch on the news front thanks to a wild election in the U.S., chaos in the Middle East, at least two assassination attempts, and Joe Biden being ushered out of the presidential race.

That was the theme of Dave Whamond’s New Year’s cartoon featuring Father Time and Baby New Year, which was a hit among editors.

Whamond had a great week, drawing three of our four most-reprinted cartoons. I laughed at his hilarious New Year’s resolution cartoon, which featured a to-do list needing a bit of work.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Happy Holidays!

It was an interesting week for editors, who deviated from Christmas to select smorgasbord of different cartoons this week.

While our most popular cartoon was a Rick McKee riff on the classic Charlie Brown Christmas tree, our second-most reprinted cartoon was a funny jab at rising prices at Starbucks by Dave Granlund.

I also laughed at Ed Wexler’s cartoon about Elon Musk stealing Donald Trump’s spotlight. It’ll be interesting to see what this budding friendship blossoms into come Jan. 20.

Droning on: Top ten cartoons of the week

For the past few weeks, mysterious drones flying over New Jersey have raised a lot of questions that remain largely unanswered by the government.

Authorities have said there’s nothing to worry about, and that a majority of the drone sightings are actually planes and passenger jets. Yet this week, the FAA temporarily banned drone flights over 20 locations in New Jersey “out of an abundance of caution.”

Not surprisingly, our cartoonists were fixated on the drone story, using the timing of Christmas to point their fingers at Santa. I liked Rick McKee’s cartoon, which features three wise men and a drone stand-in for the North Star.

McKee also had our most-reprinted cartoon of the week, but it didn’t have anything to do with drones – it shows Santa being confronted by a kid with an empty stocking. Just wait until Trump’s tariffs kick in.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#3. Dave Granlund

Donald who?

Despite the flurry of news updates regarding the incoming Trump administration, editors largely opted for lighter cartoons or entirely different topics this week.

Our most popular cartoon of the week came from the pen of Guy Parsons, who mocked out of control prices of healthcare in the U.S.

Doug Plante’s holiday shopping cartoon was also popular this week, as was Gary McCoy’s funny piece on Santa not being able to make it down the chimney. Ozempic anyone?
