The Pope and pollen: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump generally dominates the headlines, but this week the news topics were all over the place, from taxes to far-off planets where scientists uncovered possible signs of life.

Our most-reprinted cartoon this week was Dave Granlund’s tribute to Pope Francis, who died this week at the age of 88. We had a number of cartoons about Francis, but Granlund’s depiction certainly struck a chord with editors.

Another popular cartoon was Dave Whamond’s funny take on pollen, proving once again everyone cares about the weather.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Anxious America: Top ten cartoons of the week

There’s a lot of unease in the country at the moment. Whether it’s uncertainty over the impact of tariffs, fears over shuttered and decimated agencies, or unease over how he’s running the government, Donald Trump’s White House is forcing a streak of anxiety over Americans largely just trying to get by.

Nearly all our most-reprinted cartoons this week touch on some impact Trump’s Washington is having on folks. The most-popular was Dave Whamond’s Easter-themed cartoon about the sky-high price of eggs, which have only gone up since Trump took office. But I also loved Rick McKee’s cartoon about a couple on a picnic happy because their cartoon had nothing to do with Trump.

If only we could all live in such bliss.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Whamond

#2. John Darkow

#3. Rick McKee

#4. Dave Granlund

Tariff turmoil: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump’s certainly left his mark on the global economy, with his global tariffs continuing to wreak havoc on markets across the world. Here in the U.S., Wall Street has become something of a rollercoaster ride, jumping and falling on every Truth Social post from the president

The interest in everything tariffs was evident this week, as nearly all of our most-reprinted cartoons were about Trump’s tax hike on imported goods. Our most popular cartoon, drawn by Ed Wexler, focused on the poor penguins in Antarctica unexpectedly hit by Trump’s tariffs.

Dave Whamond also drew a pair of popular tariff cartoons – a funny one featuring a keyboard warrior turned tax expert, and another mocking our dwindling 401(k)s. If you haven’t logged into your retirement account lately, don’t start now. I’d wait for all of Trump’s “winning” to kick in.

Teslas and tariffs: Top ten cartoons of the week

The news was all over the place this week, from Trump’s money-crushing tariffs to continued job cuts across Washington, with some really bad pollen in between.

Dave Whamond drew our most-reprinted cartoon of the week, which focused on the vandalism of Teslas as Elon Musk remains the face of Trump’s job cuts

Another popular cartoon was Bruce Plante’s look at how difficult it is to get a human being to answer the phone following massive layoffs across multiple agencies. Good luck if you need to talk to someone about your taxes.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Whamond

Education cuts: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump didn’t hide the fact he wanted to shutter the Department of Education while on the campaign trail. Now that he’s president, he’s trying to follow through, though he’ll ultimately need the help of Congress to kill the agency for good.

In the meanwhile, the Education Department announced it was slicing its workforce in half, and cuts could impact everything from student loans to Pell grants to programs like the Rural Education Achievement Program, which helps fun low-income schools in rural areas.

John Darkow’s funny cartoon about an angry kid who thinks school has been canceled because the Education Department is being closed was our most-reprinted cartoon of the week. I also enjoyed Dave Whamond’s cartoon, which used a March Madness bracket to predict with state would be the first to get rid of education entirely.

DOGE cuts: Top ten cartoons of the week

IRS agents. VA workers. Park rangers. Air traffic controllers. Social Security administrators. No one employed by the federal government appears safe with Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency waiving a chainsaw across Washington

Our top two most-reprinted cartoons of the week come from Chris Weyant, and both mock Musk’s blunt and mistake-prone process of trimming the size of the federal workforce. I also enjoyed Jeff Koterba’s cartoon about astronauts returning home after being stuck on the International Space Station, only to find a “Planet of the Apes” scenario playing out in the U.S.

Tariff trouble: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump’s obsession with tariffs is causing a melt down on Wall Street, where stocks are plummeting at the economic chaos being caused by his administration.

Several of our most popular cartoons this week were on Trump’s on-and-off approach to tariffs, which is leaving everyone dazed and confused. Jeff Korterba drew a funny cartoon about an Easter bunny already reeling from high egg prices getting hit with tariffs from Trump.

Speaking of eggs, Chris Weyant’s cartoon about a pot of gold being less valuable than a carton of eggs was easily our most-reprinted cartoon of the week, and for good reason. Trump ran for president promising to bring costs down, but the average price of a dozen eggs in the U.S. is up to nearly $6.

I’d suggest pouring yourself a glass of wine, but apparently Trump is going to tariff that, too. The only thing left to do is laugh at the absurdity by checking out our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Doomscrolling: Top ten cartoons of the week

Have you heard the phrase doomscrolling? That’s when folks mindlessly consume negative news on their phone without lifting a finger to do anything about it.

Looks like it’s happening a lot during the Trump administration. Dave Whamond’s call for somebody, anybody to stand up and fight – including Democrats in Washington – was easily our most-reprinted cartoon of the week.

A big item in the news are Trump’s on again, off again tariffs on goods coming in from Canada and Mexico. Right now, they’re paused until next month, which led to a funny cartoon by Bob Englehart featuring a kid and his lemonade stand.

For now, don’t stop scrolling. Instead, check out our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Washington chaos: Top ten cartoons of the week

The U.S. government is undergoing mass layoffs that threaten many sectors previously taken for granted by taxpayers, including air safety, disease prevention, veteran healthcare, and even processing tax returns.

Our most-reported cartoon of the week comes from Dave Whamond, and features a scary but funny joke about a passenger paying an extra fee to guarantee a safe landing.

Editor’s also loved John Darkow’s cartoon about letting Elon Musk process everyone’s tax return, while Jeff Koterba focused his pen on Uncle Sam waiting in the unemployment line.

Gulf of Whatever: Top ten cartoons of the week

This week in Washington, one of the big news stories was a fight between Donald Trump and the Associated Press over whether it’s called the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf of America.

Our most popular cartoon of the week was drawn by Bob Englehart, and features a GPS overwhelmed by the Gulf of American and all the other new names Trump is throwing out there.

I contributed by drawing a cartoon about a depressed student being forced to write “Gulf of America” over and over again on the chalkboard. On some level, it feels like most of us are being punished.
