Supreme hysteria: Top ten cartoons of the week

The Supreme Court’s expected decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was still on the mind of cartoonists and editors this week, which isn’t surprising since the landmark ruling on abortion has been the law of the land for nearly 50 years.

Inflation and supply chain problems continue to be issues that resonate with readers, especially with the news this week that baby formula is hard to find. What food shortage will we be drawing about next week?

Inflation irritation: Top ten cartoons of the week

Inflation remains a ripe topic for cartoonists, as prices of just about everything continue to rise across the country. It’s a good thing most cartoonists have gone digital, otherwise they’d be hit hard by the cost of paper and ink.

In other news, Russia’s war in Ukraine is still going on, with Putin and his forces unable to overwhelm the country’s defenses. And Sunday is Mother’s Day, in case you’d forgotten.

Supreme Court to end Roe v. Wade: Cartoon roundup

A leaked, draft decision by the Supreme Court has shaken the nation as the justices prepare to overturn Roe v. Wade, which has been settled law in the U.S. for fifty years. The court has acknowledged that the document is authentic and it seems unlikely that any of the majority, conservative justices will change their minds about the right to an abortion.

Not surprisingly, the shocking news sent the nation’s cartoonists scrambling to their drawing tables. Here is the roundup of our cartoons:

The masks are off: Top ten cartoons of the week

COVID-19 was on the minds of cartoonists this week, after a federal judge overruled the Biden administration’s mask mandate on airplanes.

Cartoonists had a smorgasbord of topics to play with, including Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, the right-wing attack on Disney, and a shortage of airline pilots creating havoc nationwide. It’s always something.

Inflation woes: Top ten cartoons of the week

Inflation remains a big story across the country, so it’s not surprising that most of the top ten reprinted cartoons this week touched on the rising prices hitting just about everyone.

This week also saw Americans scrambling to finish their tax returns, a universally-despised activity shared by cartoonists and editors alike. And a couple of COVID-19 cartoons made it into the mix this week, as cases once again begin to rise across the country.

Easter extravaganza: Top ten cartoons of the week

Easter was certainly on the minds of editors across the country this week, with four of our top ten most reprinted cartoons giving a nod to the religious holiday. Generally, editors and readers seem to enjoy holiday cartoons, while cartoonists typically hate drawing them.

Inflation was also a big story last week, with prices on just about everything continuing to rise. And editors remain uninterested in running cartoons about the war in Ukraine.

COVID and inflation: Top ten cartoons of the week

Newspaper editorial page editors were interested in COVID, inflation and domestic issues this week.

One cartoon about Vladimir Putin snuck into the Top Ten at No. 9, but aside from that, editors weren’t too interested in Ukraine. Editorial pages are a much more peaceful place than television news.

Different Worlds – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

The top ten most reprinted editorial cartoons this week again show the stark contrast between what newspaper editors want, what cartoonists want to draw and what we are seeing on television news.

Cartoonists want to draw cartoons about Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine, which is dominating cable coverage. But editors have little interest in cartoons about the war. In the past week, only one popular cartoon mentions the war or mentions Putin, in a combined gag about Will Smith and President Biden. It seems like editorial cartoonists and newspaper editors are living in different worlds.

Historians look back at editorial cartoons as a window on their times, reflecting the concerns of readers about the issues of the day. This no longer works, and stopped being true during the Trump administration, when cartoonists were all drawing Trump, who dominated the news while editors had little interest in running editorial cartoons depicting Trump.

Oscar slap flap cartoons!

The boring Academy Awards suddenly got more interesting when Will Smith smacked Chris Rock – something that looked more like an assault than a slap.

Smith was outraged by a rude joke made about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and has since apologized for assaulting Rock, who is not pressing charges. Smith went on to win the Oscar for Best Actor and gave a tearful acceptance/apology speech.

The incident also made editorial cartoons more interesting. Here is a collection of the best Oscar slap cartoons.
