Biden malaise: Top 10 cartoons of the week

Depending on what poll you read, nearly two-thirds of the country doesn’t approve of the job Joe Biden is doing as president. Crippling inflation, more COVID variants and high gas prices are just some of the issues cartoonists linked to our 46th president and his administration this week.

Editors also liked cartoons about the new photos from the James Webb Space Telescope, which offer a celestial perspective to all the squabbling and bickering in Washington.

News fatigue: Top ten cartoons of the week

Inflation! Mass shootings! Airline staffing problems! The war in Ukraine! Is it any surprise Americans have begun to tune out the news?

Thankfully, the nation’s top cartoonists have been on top of everything, which this past week also included the resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the assassination of Shinzo Abe, the former prime minister of Japan.

Divided country: Top ten cartoons of the week

Republicans versus Democrats. City residents versus country folk. Fox News versus MSNBC. America’s widening divisions were highlighted by the nation’s top cartoonists during the July 4th holiday, with little hope we’ll unite anytime soon.

At least the fireworks were pretty.

Hot climate: Top ten cartoons of the week

Things are hot right now across the United States, and I’m not just talking about the weather.

Cartoonists responded to a host of issues this week, from the explosive January 6 committee hearings to the continued high prices we’re paying for just about everything. If that weren’t enough, there’s the looming threat of a recession off in the horizon, just in time for the midterm elections.

Lots of bad news: Top ten cartoons of the week

Record gas prices, continued inflation, flight cancellations… unfortunately, bad news makes for good editorial cartoons.

Cartoonists remain focused on the continued economic woes Americans face, whether it’s at the gas station or the airport. Editor’s loved John Darkow’s police lineup of gas pumps, which seems appropriate given how long we’ve been forced to endure record high prices.

Inflation and gas prices: Top ten cartoons of the week

Inflation continues to be a dominant issue for the nation’s top editorial cartoonists, personified by the persistently high price of gas at the pump. The declines in the stock market this week certainly didn’t quiet many concerns over a rocky economic picture for many Americans.

There is also continued interest in cartoons focused on the impact of school shootings on both kids and teachers.

Gas price gulp: Top ten cartoons of the week

Everyone not driving a Tesla is feeling a gut punch at the gas pump. In the U.S., the national average price of a gallon of gas has surpassed $5, the highest on record. So it’s not surprising that Chris Weyant’s hilarious gas station cartoon was by far our most reprinted cartoon over the past week.

Yet another shooting: Top ten cartoons of the week

After a gunman massacred 19 kids in a school in Uvalde, Texas, it’s not surprising to see a number of our shooting cartoons widely reprinted by news organizations. But what is surprising is the four most reprinted cartoons this week had nothing to do with country’s latest mass shooting – they touched on college graduation, inflation, and Memorial Day.

Peter Kuper’s cartoon about masks was also one of the most widely-reprinted cartoons this week, a sign that more than two years into the pandemic, COVID-19 still remains an important issue in the lives of readers.

Babies need food: Top ten cartoons of the week

Another week has gone by, and the nation’s cartoonists remain locked in on the baby formula shortage impacting the country. The U.S. airlifted 70,000 pounds of baby formula from Europe over the weekend, and another flight is expected this week.

Inflation and the economy also remain ripe topics for cartoonists, with costs continuing to skyrocket and the price of gas surpassing record levels.

Baby formula blues: Top ten cartoons of the week

This week, our top ten most reprinted cartoons covered a range of topics, including a troubling baby formula shortage and continued strain on our wallets at the gas pump.

Editors also liked Jeff Koterba’s cartoon about Twitter’s identity crisis and Chris Weyant’s clever take on the Supreme Court’s likely decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. And pollen is a perennial nuisance for everyone, cartoonist and editor alike.
