Stuck in space: Top ten cartoons of the week

The U.S. will have a new president before two astronauts trapped in space will be able to return home.

Thanks to issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams will be stuck on the International Space Station until at least February, when either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will be living in the White House.

Chris Weyant mocked the situation in a cartoon popular with editors this week, comparing the astronauts’ wait to Joe Biden’s lame-duck status as commander in chief. I also enjoyed Dave Granlund’s comparison of the situation to Gilligan’s Island, the classic TV show where a “three hour tour” famously turned into a much longer stay on an uncharted desert island.

Back to school blues: Top ten cartoons of the week

Parents are normally ecstatic when it’s time for their children to shuffle back to school. But thanks to inflation, the price of just about everything remains high, including that cost of school supplies.

Jeff Koterba’s cartoon about budgeting for back-to-school was our most-reprinted cartoon of the week. Bob Englehart’s cartoon about the whole thing being a scam was also popular with editors.

As far as politics are concerned, I chuckled at Chris Weyant’s cartoon about the annoying back-and-forth over crowd sizes, while Dick Wright dinged Kamala Harris for copying Donald Trump’s plan to make tips tax free.

Economic roller coaster: Top ten cartoons of the week

Wall Street gave everyone whiplash last week, with stocks tanking before bouncing back in a late-week comeback.

Dave Granlund’s “The sky is falling!” cartoon was popular among editors this week, and I loved the imagery of Chris Weyant’s Olympics-inspired toon about the brief stock market crash.

This week’s most-popular cartoon continued on a theme that began a few weeks ago, about people looking for any excuse to ignore the election. With astronauts stuck on the International Space Station until February, they won’t just miss the election – they won’t be back to Earth until after we inaugurate a new president.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. John Darkow

Olympic distraction: Top ten cartoons of the week

The Olympics couldn’t have come at a better time.

The quadrennial competition, being held this year in Paris, is a perfect distraction for weary American voters overcome by breaking news. In the span of a month, former President Donald Trump was shot at a rally, JD Vance was named his running mate, Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race, and Kamala Harris has become the Democratic nominee. Oh, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. left a dead bear in Central Park

Chris Weyant’s toon about the the Olympics giving Americans something, anything else to focus on was our most-reprinted cartoon of the week. I also chuckled at Dave Whamond’s cartoon highlighting the Olympic events for everyday people.

Would-be assassin: Top ten cartoons of the week

It’s hard to keep up with the current news cycle, with the failed assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump being pushed out of the news by Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race.

We should see a bunch of great Biden and Kamala Harris cartoons Monday, but the most-reprinted cartoons of the past week were focused on Trump’s close brush with death during a political rally in Pennsylvania.

Dave Whamond penned the most-reprinted cartoon of the week, featuring a kid in front of a computer confused when prompted to go outside and play. Another popular cartoon, drawn by Jeff Koterba, featured a rare agreement between Democrats and Republicans over the shocking security failures that allowed the gunman to get so close to Trump.

Age anxiety: Top ten cartoons of the week

Will Joe Biden drop out of the race? That’s the question everyone is asking following his disastrous debate performance last month.

Our most reprinted cartoon this week comes from Dave Granlund, who points out Biden isn’t the only candidate with an age problem. But his poor debate performance is helping people forget his opponent, 78-year-old Donald Trump, isn’t exactly a young man.

Another popular cartoon was a beach scene drawn by Rivers, with a mother enjoying her time away from politics and the news. Ignorance is truly bliss.

Wild weather: Top ten cartoons of the week

Has it been hot outside where you live?

More than 100 million Americans are currently under heat advisories thanks to a heat dome sitting over the eastern U.S. Jeff Koterba’s cartoon playing off the hot weather to criticize fake news and disinformation was a hit among editors this week.

I also chuckled at Chris Weyant’s weather cartoon, which features a couple of chickens bickering over the heat.

Conviction conflict: Top ten cartoons of the week

This week, Hunter Biden – the president’s son – was convicted on gun charges by the same Department of Justice accused of being biased against former President Donald Trump.

Naturally, cartoonists feasted on the conflict. The most popular was Chris Weyant’s funny response, which tied the trial and Hunter’s conviction to a Father’s Day present gone horribly awry.

However, our most-reprinted cartoon this week came from Dave Granlund, who deftly outlined all the pitfalls facing us as we trek out on our summer vacations and attempt to tune out politics, at least for a little bit.

Robot revolution: Top ten cartoons of the week

Afraid of robots taking over? If your phone habits are like most Americans, they already have, as Dave Whamond points out in his funny cartoon about artificial intelligence and our growing addiction to screens.

Sadly, a lot of the info we’re reading online is wrong. Frank Hansen mocked Google for its error-filled, A.I.-powered search results that told people to put glue on pizza and to eat rocks.

Fortunately, computers will be drawing all editorial cartoons in the near future, so the robots won’t have to worry about being mocked by us humans.

Job-killing A.I.: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump’s historic guilty verdict coming Thursday night means none of this week’s most popular cartoons feature the first felon to have a serious shot at becoming president.

Instead, we have a delightful mix of topics ranging from the anniversary of D-Day to the death of basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton. There are also several cartoons about the economy, which is both doing really well and worse than it’s ever been, depending on whom you’re speaking with.

This week’s most-reprinted cartoon was Jeff Koterba’s warning shot about A.I., featuring a man so desperate to keep his job he’s considering doing it as a hobby.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:
