Doomscrolling: Top ten cartoons of the week

Have you heard the phrase doomscrolling? That’s when folks mindlessly consume negative news on their phone without lifting a finger to do anything about it.

Looks like it’s happening a lot during the Trump administration. Dave Whamond’s call for somebody, anybody to stand up and fight – including Democrats in Washington – was easily our most-reprinted cartoon of the week.

A big item in the news are Trump’s on again, off again tariffs on goods coming in from Canada and Mexico. Right now, they’re paused until next month, which led to a funny cartoon by Bob Englehart featuring a kid and his lemonade stand.

For now, don’t stop scrolling. Instead, check out our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Washington chaos: Top ten cartoons of the week

The U.S. government is undergoing mass layoffs that threaten many sectors previously taken for granted by taxpayers, including air safety, disease prevention, veteran healthcare, and even processing tax returns.

Our most-reported cartoon of the week comes from Dave Whamond, and features a scary but funny joke about a passenger paying an extra fee to guarantee a safe landing.

Editor’s also loved John Darkow’s cartoon about letting Elon Musk process everyone’s tax return, while Jeff Koterba focused his pen on Uncle Sam waiting in the unemployment line.

Fire fatigue: Top ten cartoons of the week

While Donald Trump’s inauguration is next week, America’s focus has been out west, as deadly fires continue to burn around Los Angeles.

At least 27 people have been killed by the fires, while thousands have been evacuated. Countless lives have been impacted by the destruction, which early estimates say could cost hundreds of billions of dollars.

One of our most-reprinted cartoons on the fire was Jeff Koterba’s touching tribute to the first responders, volunteers, and donors who are selflessly helping their fellow citizens in a moment of need. It’s hard to be critical in the middle of a disaster, but I did appreciate R.J. Matson’s cartoon about the blame game going on in Los Angeles, pegged around fire hydrants lacking water during the initial stages of the fire.

2025 is here! Top ten cartoons of the week

2025 will certainly be a year to remember, capped with Donald Trump returning to the White House. But 2024 was no slouch on the news front thanks to a wild election in the U.S., chaos in the Middle East, at least two assassination attempts, and Joe Biden being ushered out of the presidential race.

That was the theme of Dave Whamond’s New Year’s cartoon featuring Father Time and Baby New Year, which was a hit among editors.

Whamond had a great week, drawing three of our four most-reprinted cartoons. I laughed at his hilarious New Year’s resolution cartoon, which featured a to-do list needing a bit of work.

Happy Holidays!

It was an interesting week for editors, who deviated from Christmas to select smorgasbord of different cartoons this week.

While our most popular cartoon was a Rick McKee riff on the classic Charlie Brown Christmas tree, our second-most reprinted cartoon was a funny jab at rising prices at Starbucks by Dave Granlund.

I also laughed at Ed Wexler’s cartoon about Elon Musk stealing Donald Trump’s spotlight. It’ll be interesting to see what this budding friendship blossoms into come Jan. 20.

Droning on: Top ten cartoons of the week

For the past few weeks, mysterious drones flying over New Jersey have raised a lot of questions that remain largely unanswered by the government.

Authorities have said there’s nothing to worry about, and that a majority of the drone sightings are actually planes and passenger jets. Yet this week, the FAA temporarily banned drone flights over 20 locations in New Jersey “out of an abundance of caution.”

Not surprisingly, our cartoonists were fixated on the drone story, using the timing of Christmas to point their fingers at Santa. I liked Rick McKee’s cartoon, which features three wise men and a drone stand-in for the North Star.

McKee also had our most-reprinted cartoon of the week, but it didn’t have anything to do with drones – it shows Santa being confronted by a kid with an empty stocking. Just wait until Trump’s tariffs kick in.

Election fatigue: Top ten cartoons of the week

The election might not have turned out how you hoped, but at least you won’t be shown any campaign ads for a while.

That doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to be exhausted. Some of our most popular cartoons this week were about the fatigue of voting, followed up with the anxiety of waiting hours to find out the results.

Overlooked in all of this were the election workers, most of whom are volunteers, who showed up despite four years of threats and insults. I compared them to the heroes of Iwo Jima in World War II in my cartoon, which still doesn’t feel like enough praise.

The election nears: Top ten cartoons of the week

Election day is less than two weeks away, which means plenty of time for you to be inundated with more polls, campaign ads, and conspiracy theories about voting.

Our most popular cartoon of the week came from Bob Englehart, who suggests a nice, long hibernation to sleep through the inevitable recounts, legal battles, and fake controversies on social media. Editors also liked Chris Weyant’s cartoon about polls, which you should stop reading immediately if you want to reclaim your sanity before Election Day.

Another shooter: Top ten cartoons of the week

Editor’s note: This column has been updated to correct a misspelling of assassination.

Can we get to Election Day without another assassination attempt targeting our presidential candidates?

A potential gunman outside Donald Trump’s Florida golf course was shot at and apprehended by authorities last weekend, calling into question how rigorous security is around the former president. Rick McKee compared Trump’s security detail to a slice of stinky cheese in a popular cartoon among editors this week.

While the second assassination attempt dominated our cartoons this week, our most-reprinted cartoon was Dave Granlund’s funny take on fuel prices going down. So much for electric cars.

Ads, ads, and more ads.

If you are unlucky enough to live in a battleground state, you’ve probably been inundated with an endless stream of campaign commercials. Bob Englehart’s widely-reprinted cartoon hit the nail on the head, while Dave Granlund and R.J. Matson both mocked the idea voters could still be undecided after such a deluge of information.
