Back to the moon: Top ten cartoons of the week

We’re going back to the moon!

Jeff Koterba’s cartoon about NASA’s Artemis II mission, which will send four astronauts around the moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972, was easily our most reprinted cartoon this week.

Editors were also interested in cartoons about longtime Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who reportedly accepted expensive vacations and gifts without disclosing them.

Expensive Easter Eggs: Top ten cartoons of the week

Sorry, Easter Bunny.

In the lead-up to Easter, a number of our most popular cartoons this week riffed on the impact frustratingly high egg prices could have on Easter.

There was also that relatively-minor news that Donald Trump became the first president in U.S. history to be indicted on criminal charges, as well as yet another school shooting, this time in Nashville, Tenn.

TikTok tango: Top ten cartoons of the week

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew faced blistering questions this week, as legislators try to decide whether to ban the Chinese-owned social media platform within the U.S.

The irony, of course, is politicians are trying to protect children from a website while not lifting a finger following the latest mass shooting at a school, this time The Covenant School in Nashville, Tenn.

Our AI future: Top ten cartoons of the week

Writing stories. Chatting with customers. Creating illustrations. It seems like computers powered by artificial intelligence are doing everything these days. Cartoonist Rick McKee even turned to A.I. to help him create a cartoon critical of the creeping abilities of computers.

Other popular cartoons this week touched on the continued high cost of food, turmoil in the banking industry, and an awkward moment when a conservative pundit couldn’t define the term “woke.”

Bank bust: Top ten cartoons of the week

It wasn’t a great week for banks, as concern about the health of the banking system hit the stock market hard this week. So it’s not surprising many of our most popular cartoons this week revolved around the crisis in confidence surrounding the nation’s banks.

11-minute workout: Top ten cartoons of the week

It was really a mixed bag for editors this week, as our most popular cartoons featured a number of different topics, ranging from artificial intelligence to President Biden’s lackluster support.

Our most popular cartoon this week was an exercise-related gag by Jeff Koterba, riffing off studies that show walking just 11 minutes a day is beneficial to your health. It’s probably best to avoid the drive thru, though.

Hot and cold: Top ten cartoons of the week

It was an interesting week, as no single news story (outside of “Dilbert” being dropped by its syndicate) seemed to dominate the headlines. As a result, this week’s most reprinted cartoons span across multiple topics and ideas.

Our most popular cartoon among editors this week was Jeff Koterba’s piece on the growing divide between red and blue states. Only in this case, he was riffing off the weather, which was equally as divisive this week .

Jimmy Carter appreciation: Top ten cartoons of the week

With the news former President Jimmy Carter has been placed on hospice care, Dave Granlund’s tribute to the former peanut farmer and Navy veteran turned commander-in-chief was easily this week’s most popular cartoon among editors.

Otherwise, it was a mixed bag as far as topics go. Cartoons about inflation, the Ohio train derailment, and the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were all popular with editors this week. I particularly liked Pat Bagley’s riff on Little Red Riding Hood, facing a dark forest of social media sites.

UFO mystery: Top ten cartoons of the week

The biggest story of the week has been the mysteriously high number of unidentified flying objects shot down over the United States. President Biden tried to reassure Americans by suggesting there was nothing nefarious going on, while also noting his administration still doesn’t know what the three objects were.

The mystery was heightened after the U.S. was forced to down a Chinese spy balloon that ventured across the continental United States. So it’s no surprise cartoons about the mysterious objects were among our most popular among editors this week.

Bursting balloons: Top ten cartoons of the week

This week, it was all about balloons.

The Chinese spy balloon shot down by the U.S. after floating across the country was the perfect metaphor for cartoonists. So it’s no surprise that balloon cartoons made up a majority of our most-reprinted toons this week.

Editors also reprinted a lot of cartoons about President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech, where he went back and forth with disapproving Republicans in real time. It’s been a wild week.
