Labor Day and football: Top ten cartoons of the week

After what felt like a fast-moving summer, Labor Day is finally here. Considering how much editors love holiday cartoons, it’s not surprising Dave Granlund’s timely cartoon mashing the holiday with all the crazy weather we’ve experience the past few months was easily our most-reprinted cartoon this week.

Labor Day also means the return of college football and the NFL, so a couple of pigskin cartoons were widely reprinted this week.

Back to school: Top 10 cartoons of the week

Is it that time of year already?

Back to school cartoons were popular with editors this week. I chuckled at Bruce Plante’s cartoon juxtaposing a frowning kid with a smiling parent, a sentiment I’m sure many families relate to after spending the entire summer with their children.

Computer drivers: Top ten cartoons of the week

With all the talk of automation and A.I., it’s funny to think that driverless cars have been zipping around San Francisco for the last few years.

Last week, the California Public Utilities Commission voted to give the two companies who run the automated cars permission to offer rides throughout San Francisco anytime during the day.

That doesn’t mean the technology is perfect. Just this week, an autonomous vehicles drove into wet cement at a city paving project, making Dave Whamond’s cartoon about driverless cars and traffic lights oddly prophetic.

Polls, polls, polls! Top ten cartoons of the week

The first Republican presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle is later this month, and not a day goes by without the release of a new poll. Donald Trump has a wide lead over his fellow Republicans, Ron DeSantis continues to shed support, Mike Pence… well, the less said about his poll numbers, the better.

Bob Englehart had our most popular cartoon this week, a funny jab at the omnipresence of polling data as we crawl towards the election. It’s only going to get worse from here.

Our aging leaders: Top ten cartoons of the week

We had a real mix of topics this week among our most popular cartoons, topped with Rick McKee’s funny swing at all the octogenarians in charge of our government.

There was also a nice mix of alien cartoons, thanks to a UFO hearing in Washington last week featuring interstellar claims from former military officials. Maybe we should just put the extra terrestrials in charge.

Barbie and Oppie: Top ten cartoons of the week

It’s been a week since the dual release of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in theaters, and I’m still trying to wrap my brain around how the unlikely duo became an international phenomenon.

“Barbie” alone has already earned over $520 million globally, with “Oppenheimer” pitching in another $265 million as the pair enter their second weekend. Our two most popular cartoons this week were about “Barbenheimer,” rounded out by cartoons about a scorching heat wave and Twitter changing its name to X.

Heating up: Top ten cartoons of the week

It’s always hot in the summer, but this year nature has taken things up a notch. Cities across the country are breaking their own heat records – in Phoenix, the temperature topped 110 degrees for 19 straight days. And June was the hottest month on record dating back 174 years, according to NOAA.

So yeah, it’s hot. Not surprisingly, a good amount of our most-reprinted cartoons this week focused on the weather, and when we might get some relief from his latest heat wave.

Plastic posturing: Top ten cartoons of the week

It’s summer, which is typically a slower time for news. But between wildfires in Canada, controversial Supreme Court rulings, and the launch of Twitter rival Threads, there’s been plenty to keep our cartoonists busy.

Easily our most popular cartoon this week was by Dave Whamond, a funny jab at stores requiring us to use reusable bags while just about everything we’re buying comes in a plastic container.

Zuck vs. Elon: Top ten cartoons of the week

It was the battle of the billionaires this week, as Mark Zuckerberg went to war with Elon Musk by launching his own Twitter clone called Threads.

Both tech giants are fun to draw, so I’d expect a fair amount of cartoons about the conflict in the weeks to come.

Smoky haze: Top ten cartoons of the week

Smoke from Canadian wildfires one again drifted across the border this week, impacting air quality from Chicago to Philadelphia. John Darkow’s cartoon summing up all the weather-related dread Americans have faced this summer was our most popular cartoon among editors.

Darkow also drew the second-most reprinted cartoon, which commented on the terrible math scores among kids following COVID lockdowns.
