We’re only now beginning to get cartoons about Donald Trump being shot at a political rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, but last week there were plenty of cartoons highlighting the divisive nature of our country and the corrosive nature of our politics.

In fact, last week’s most-reprinted cartoon came from the pen of Chris Weyant, and seems oddly prescient in the wake of the Trump rally shooting. Weyant’s cartoon shows a fried Uncle Sam after attempting to unify blue states and red states, which is as relevant now as it was before Saturday’s rally.

Will Joe Biden drop out of the race? That’s the question everyone is asking following his disastrous debate performance last month.

Our most reprinted cartoon this week comes from Dave Granlund, who points out Biden isn’t the only candidate with an age problem. But his poor debate performance is helping people forget his opponent, 78-year-old Donald Trump, isn’t exactly a young man.

Another popular cartoon was a beach scene drawn by Rivers, with a mother enjoying her time away from politics and the news. Ignorance is truly bliss.

Well now do you care about the election?

After last week’s debate debacle, President Joe Biden is facing open calls to end his presidential campaign. And Donald Trump didn’t win over any new supporters after repeating lies about the 2020 election and refusing to accept the results this time around.

Rick McKee captured the feeling of much of the country well in his debate cartoon, featuring an anxious Uncle Sam. There was also Jeff Koterba’s Abraham Lincoln, sick to his stomach over both candidate’s performances.

One way or another, we’ll elect a president about four months.

Has it been hot outside where you live?

More than 100 million Americans are currently under heat advisories thanks to a heat dome sitting over the eastern U.S. Jeff Koterba’s cartoon playing off the hot weather to criticize fake news and disinformation was a hit among editors this week.

I also chuckled at Chris Weyant’s weather cartoon, which features a couple of chickens bickering over the heat.

This week, Hunter Biden – the president’s son – was convicted on gun charges by the same Department of Justice accused of being biased against former President Donald Trump.

Naturally, cartoonists feasted on the conflict. The most popular was Chris Weyant’s funny response, which tied the trial and Hunter’s conviction to a Father’s Day present gone horribly awry.

Afraid of robots taking over? If your phone habits are like most Americans, they already have, as Dave Whamond points out in his funny cartoon about artificial intelligence and our growing addiction to screens.

Sadly, a lot of the info we’re reading online is wrong. Frank Hansen mocked Google for its error-filled, A.I.-powered search results that told people to put glue on pizza and to eat rocks.

Fortunately, computers will be drawing all editorial cartoons in the near future, so the robots won’t have to worry about being mocked by us humans.

Donald Trump’s historic guilty verdict coming Thursday night means none of this week’s most popular cartoons feature the first felon to have a serious shot at becoming president.

Instead, we have a delightful mix of topics ranging from the anniversary of D-Day to the death of basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton. There are also several cartoons about the economy, which is both doing really well and worse than it’s ever been, depending on whom you’re speaking with.

This week’s most-reprinted cartoon was Jeff Koterba’s warning shot about A.I., featuring a man so desperate to keep his job he’s considering doing it as a hobby.

Our list of the most-reprinted cartoons was a real smorgasbord this week, with topics ranging from the increasing role of artificial intelligence to the collapse of Red Lobster. I particularly enjoyed Bob Englehart’s cartoon about the tough needle cartoonists need to thread these days to make it onto the opinion page.

Editors loved Chris Weyant’s cartoon about next month’s presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Though I don’t think CNN will be promoting it as “The Geezer vs. The Sleazer.”

Addicted to screens? You’re not alone – according to recent studies, upwards of half of all Americans who own a smartphone display addictive behavior.

But that’s also nothing new. As Dave Whamond points out in his popular cartoon this week, people were addicted to their television screens when phones were still devices attached to the wall.

When will a presidential election NOT be the most important of our lifetime?

That’s the question John Darkow asked in his widely-reprinted cartoon this week about the upcoming election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. He’s not the only cartoonist looking warily ahead – Rivers drew the 2024 contest as a tornado ready to rip through someone’s home, while Pat Bagley made it clear supporting a third-party candidate was like throwing your vote away.
